well, I want to learn this beautiful Caucasian language of Chechen.

is anyone welling to help me?

I've noticed that some of you can speak English and some Arabic too

oh and I've to mention that I speak NO Russian! so reaching this place to post a topic was a real pain!

but alhmduliLlah it worked at last

for a start I've learned the Cyrillic alphabet from somewhere online and picked some *few* Chechen phrases.

and I know about two websites that teaches Chechen, but still need native speakers to throw my loads of questions upon ^^

that's why I joined this forum, I'm looking forward to your help

and I'll be glad to offer any help in Arabic

ok first I've started with the Chechen national anthem (Death or Freedom) listening/reading the lyrics in the same time from wikipedia *it is gone now O.O i cant find it there!*

and also I've found a good Chechen song, and have been looking for it's lyrics and hopefully found it here in this forum it's НОХЧИЙЧОЬ by Ali Dimayev

so, by reading/listening to those, I came up with some conclusions, correct me please:

# the letter "х" can be pronounced in two ways, one is like the Arabic خ (which is [x] in IPA, Spanish j and German ch in auch I think that's enough ;D)

and the other way is when it's followed by "ь" right? then it's pronounced like the Arabic ح like the H in alHmduliLlah, [ħ] in IPA

is that right? or is there any other ways it's pronounced in?


# the (letter?) 1, it's a bit confusing for me, I've been told that it works like a glottal stop (like the Arabic hamza) but I've noticed it sometimes makes a sound like the Arabic غ [ɣ] in IPA (like the French r somehow) and while reading here I've noticed that it's used for the Arabic ع sound too! like in wa 'alaikm assalaam! which is [ʕ] IPA

I hope someone will makes it clear for me to understand this letter/factor

ah another thing:
# what exactly are the differences between the Russian alphabet and the Chechen alphabet?

is it a lot? what can I do I love this language!

U r absolutley right about sound "h".
I've mentioned this parallel when i was learning arabic as well.

Did it take u a lot to make this investigation?

But, up to me, starting language from lyrics of national anthem is not the best idea, just because in translation this lyrics sounds pretty confusing. Even for us.

Do you have somebody to practise the pronounciation with over there?

І is occlusive guttural voiced phoneme. When you pronounce it - full commissure has to occur in the larynx, in the chink of the vocal cords. Puff, coming from the lungs, in an instantaneous push opens this commissure. Examples (Chechen - Russian - English) : Іу — пастух - shepherd, Іа — зима - winter, тІетаІа — наступай - step on!, воІ — сын - son, йоІ — дочь - daughter (girl), баІ — чертополох - thistle.

There is no such sound in Russian. Many times, on the Internet, І is being replaced by "1" due to the reasons beyond my understanding (laziness or lack of knowledge, perhaps?)

This information is taken from Aliroev's manual for self-tuition of the Chechen Language (ISВМ 5-87444-145-Х) with few changes/additions from me.

well, I dont know, I began some time ago, a month or so maybe, but it was during my study so never took it regularly. but for the second song I've got its lyrics only a week ago.


yes, you're right, but you know I wanted to get used to the way the language sounds, I've checked some Chechen radio station online too. of course I'd never advice someone who wants to learn Arabic for example to start with sung and written Arabic.

now it doesnt sound weird to my ears, I can pronounce some words but without knowing their meanings! -.-

Albert, thank you very much I tried to guess the way those Chechen words are pronounced but it'd be great if someone would record them for me.. from the explanation you've posted it looks exactly like the glottal stop "hamza" in Arabic if not a bit stronger.


you guys *must* make a website to teach Chechen with formal lessons and audio samples! you can take me as an experimenting field! 8)
and I'm ready for any suggestions needed.

Hi Mariam, there are Chechen lessons with pronounciation but the translation of the words is in Russian and the Chechen words and sentences are written in cyrilic. So it may not be useful for you.

By the way, Albert gave you quite a good explanation of some Chechen sounds. When I asked about these specific Chechen sounds, I got the following explanation from my on-line teacher: Put a fork in your throat and try to say "k" for example... ) I never tried it.

it's ok if they are in Cyrillic since that is the way the language is written, but it's much better if the translation expanded to be universal I mean if the same lessons would be translated to English.

well, that's half the way guys, *there are* lessons, just translate them!

*still waiting for an answer about the alphabet to post my other question, after being done with the alphabet I'll move towards making conversations :|
